Best time for climbing
Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year, but timing makes all the difference between a good climb and an unforgettable one. While weather on the mountain can always surprise you, some months are far better than others for clear skies, drier trails, and comfortable trekking conditions.
The most recommended months to climb are January, February, July, August, September, and October. These periods fall within the two main dry seasons, December to early March and late June to October, when conditions are generally more stable.
During these times, climbers enjoy stunning views, plenty of sunshine, and minimal rain.
Month-by-Month Overview of Kilimanjaro
Unlike the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro never “closes.” You can attempt it year-round, though April/May and November are typically avoided due to heavier rainfall. Here’s a closer look:
January & February – Early March
- Clear skies, warm weather, and occasional snow at the summit make for spectacular photos.
- Busy enough to have a great atmosphere, but not as crowded as peak summer.
Best for: Climbers who want good weather with moderate crowds.
March, April & May
- Early March can still be pleasant, but rains soon roll in, especially from late March through May. Trails become muddy, visibility drops, and trekking gets tougher.
- April and early May are considered the long rainy season, making it the least favorable time to climb.
Best for: Experienced hikers seeking solitude, willing to trade comfort for quiet trails.
June, July, August & September
- Peak climbing season. The combination of the best weather and the European/North American summer holidays makes this the busiest period.
- July and August are the most popular; June and September offer similar conditions with fewer people.
Best for: Climbers who want the very best weather and don’t mind sharing the mountain with others.
October & November
- Short rains arrive, usually in short afternoon bursts rather than day-long downpours.
- The mountain is much quieter, and routes on the northern side (Rongai or Northern Circuit) are more sheltered from rainfall.
Best for: Trekkers who want solitude and don’t mind a bit of rain.
Weather & Trail Conditions
Kilimanjaro doesn’t have traditional seasons, it has wet and dry periods. The driest months (January–early March, June–October) are the most comfortable. April/May and November are the wettest, and therefore the least recommended.
Temperature
- At the summit, temperatures drop well below freezing year-round.
- December to March and June tend to be colder, often with snow at higher elevations.
- July through September are slightly warmer, but still cold at the top.
Crowds
- Expect more climbers during January–February and June–October.
- The Machame and Marangu routes are busiest, while Lemosho, Rongai, and the Northern Circuit offer quieter alternatives.
- At Kilimanjaro Unforgettable, we provide private toilet tents to ensure comfort even during busy seasons.
Visibility
- Clear skies are common in the dry seasons, perfect for panoramic views.
- Rains bring cloud cover, fog, and redu
Climbing During a Full Moon.
Many climbers plan their trek around the full moon for an extra-special experience. The summit trail glows under natural light, reducing the need for headlamps and making for a magical night hike.
- Start your trek a few days before the full moon to reach Uhuru Peak at just the right time.
- For a quieter experience, consider trekking around the new moon for incredible stargazing.
- Best overall months: January, February, July, August, September, October.
- Best for fewer crowds: June, early March, late September, or October.
- Avoid: April/May (long rains) and November (short rains).
