Lemosho route

Details

At Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), you will be picked up by a Nitoursandsafaris employee and taken to your hotel. The hotel offers everything you need for a comfortable stay: cosy rooms, hot water, friendly staff, a swimming pool and internet access. In the evening, you will receive a briefing about the start of the climb.
After breakfast, you will be given a brief reminder of the instructions and then drive (approx. 3-4 hours) to the western entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park: the Londorossi Gate at an altitude of 2,250 metres. The climbing permit will be obtained on site and, after registering with the search and rescue service, the group will begin the hike to the first camp on the route, Mti Mkubwa Camp at an altitude of 2,650 m. Rain jackets are very important on this day, as you will be hiking through a rainforest. Upon arrival, the tents are set up and lunch can be enjoyed. Afterwards, they set off on an acclimatisation hike to Shira 1 Camp, a difference in altitude of 300 metres. Afterwards, they hike back to camp, where a hot dinner awaits them. This hike is very important for acclimatising to the altitude.
Early in the morning, you will enjoy a hearty breakfast. Then the hike to an altitude of 3,500 metres begins. The breathtaking view of the Shira Plateau and Kibo Volcano will leave you in awe. The route from Mti Mkubwa Camp to the second high camp, Shira 1 Camp at 3,610 m, is fairly easy and takes about 5-6 hours. This allows for gradual acclimatisation. As a reward, you will be served a prepared lunch and have the opportunity to rest in your tent or explore the surroundings.
On this day, we hike from Shira 1 Camp at an altitude of 3,610 metres to Shira 2 Camp at 3,850 metres. Enjoy spectacular views of the African savannah and the unique flora of Kilimanjaro on this easy trail. From Shira 2 Camp, you can see Mount Meru, the fifth highest peak in Africa and the second highest in Tanzania, if the weather is good. The ascent of Cathedral Peak at 3,872 m is the highest point of the extinct Shira volcano. On a clear day, you have a breathtaking view down into the valley. This hike is easy with no technical challenges. If the summit is covered in clouds, there is a great opportunity for an unforgettable photo. If you would like to skip this hike due to weather conditions, you can head directly to Camp Shira 2. However, Nitoursandsafaris believes that this little detour is worth experiencing.
After breakfast, you will leave Camp Shira at 3,850 m to reach the most important point on the route, the Lava Tower at 4,600 m. Many ascents and descents on this section of the trail end in a camp at an altitude of over 4,600 m. Some sections may be difficult, and it is normal to feel a little uncomfortable. One to two hours at this altitude are sufficient to acclimatise. Lunch will be served. Afterwards, you will descend to Camp Barranco at an altitude of 3,900 metres. There you will see the famous Barranco Wall, which is impressive both for its size and its steepness! The next day, you will climb it on an easy route.
Early in the morning, you will enjoy a hearty breakfast before beginning the hike to Barranco Wall. We recommend leaving camp as early as possible to avoid crowds from other groups. The hike up the gorge wall is not difficult and only takes about an hour. After the ascent, you can take photos in front of Kibo Volcano or rest. Then a more difficult hike to Camp Karanga begins. Again, you will have numerous ascents and descents ahead of you, but we will find the optimal pace for everyone in the group. A hot lunch is provided at the camp. After a few hours, you will have to complete an acclimatisation hike towards Camp Barafu with an altitude difference of 200 m and then descend back to the camp.
After a warm and hearty breakfast, your hike to Camp Barafu Summit begins. From here, you will embark on your final night hike to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, your final destination. The camp will be set up in advance so that everything is ready for your arrival and you can simply relax and rest at Camp Barafu Summit. It is best to spend the rest of the day resting and sleeping before the night-time summit climb.
The group sets off at night from Camp Barafu at 4,673 metres and begins the final ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point of Kilimanjaro. It is a relatively easy climb, but even normal physical activity can feel strenuous due to the altitude. That is why Nitoursandsafaris closely monitors your physical and mental well-being. After your successful ascent and reaching the end of the Lemosho route, you can descend to the next glacier if you wish. You will then return to Barafu Camp, where you will have two hours to rest before continuing your descent to Millennium Camp at 3,950 m. PLEASE NOTE: Most accidents happen during the descent and due to carelessness.
The Canp Millennium is located in a tropical rainforest. When you wake up, you will feel relief at the lower altitude and satisfaction at having reached the summit. After a hearty breakfast, you will make your way to the exit at Mweka Gate at 1,640 metres. There you can take photos, reflect on your experiences and chat with other tour members.
Rest at the hotel and transfer to the airport.
