Are you planning a safari in Tanzania? Whether it’s your first time or you’ve been to Tanzania before, good preparation makes all the difference. This list isn’t about packing too much, but about taking only what you need to feel comfortable and be prepared for anything.

Documents:

Before you close your suitcase, check once more that you have all your documents:

A valid passport (valid for at least six months after the end of your stay).
Yellow fever vaccination certificate, if you are travelling from a high-risk country.

100 USD (cash only) for US citizens
50 USD (cash only) for nationals of the UK/EU and most other countries.
A copy of your flight tickets.
Travel insurance (must be booked online via Tanzania, e.g.: https://visitzanzibar.go.tz/).
Health or dental insurance cards
A credit card (preferably Visa or MasterCard)
Some US cash (banknotes issued after 2004 only)

Clothing: simple and comfortable:

It doesn’t need to look smart, but it should be practical. Clothing that can be worn in layers and is easy to take off. It can be cool in the morning, warm in the afternoon and windy in the evening.

Stick to neutral colours such as khaki, beige and olive green. Avoid dark blue and black, as these colours attract tsetse flies.

What to pack:

Lightweight T-shirts or polo shirts (2–5)
Long-sleeved tops for sun protection
Shorts and light trousers
A jumper or fleece for cool mornings and evenings
Comfortable walking shoes or sandals
Sun hat and sunglasses
Socks, underwear and nightwear
Rain jacket or poncho (during the rainy season)
Warm clothing (hat, gloves, thermal underwear) if you are travelling during the cold months
Warm clothing for early morning hot-air balloon rides

You should definitely bring:

Camera and extra memory cards
Binoculars for that extra detail
Sun cream and insect repellent
Hand sanitiser and wet wipes
Basic first-aid kit and your personal medication
Malaria tablets
Toiletries (soap, toothbrush, shampoo, eye drops, etc.), although these are provided at your accommodation.
Torch or head torch
Chargers, power bank and spare batteries
Plug adapters for UK sockets
Anti-itch cream or antihistamine for insect bites

Practical tips:

Soft bags are easier to stow – travel bags or sports bags fit more easily into safari vehicles.
Take a small rucksack for your essentials: passport, money, medication, camera, mobile phone and a change of clothes. Keep it with you at all times.
Travel light – most lodges offer a laundry service, so you won’t need much.
Leave extravagant items at home – it’s best to leave hairdryers, heavy make-up and jewellery at home.
Spread your cash across different places – your purse, hand luggage and money belt.

Keep some space free for souvenirs – you’re bound to find a few treasures you’ll want to take home
